Connecting many devices over time can cause issues with WMDC / ActiveSync

8 Sep 2016

Our production team has found that over time after connecting many different units to Microsoft Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC, formerly ActiveSync), connection issues will eventually be encountered with future unit connections.

To eliminate these connection issues on a particular computer, they have deleted all USB enumerations from the Windows registry with the Device Type of "Active Sync device" under keys such as described at this web page.

Using a software utility such as NirSoft USBDeview to view and delete these multiple entries can be simpler.

If this does not help, it may help to go into Start > Settings > Control Panel > Uninstall a Program, remove just "Windows Mobile Device Center Driver Update" but leave "Windows Mobile Device Center", open WMDC, and then connect a device.

If you are still encountering issues, there are many other known causes as described at the following web pages.
