Wedge software for the Field PC

Some barcode scan guns, digital weigh scales, and other instruments which can output data such as via serial cable or Bluetooth need a "wedge" app to open the port and input data into text fields of other apps and web pages. The SerialMagic Gears version 1.32.89 or later app for Android supports the integrated serial port on the Allegro 3 and Archer 3.

Many barcode scanners, such as the Socket Mobile Scan Card Series and the Allegro Barcode Expansion Pod, include software that runs in the background providing what is referred to as "wedge" functions.

Other software which provides "wedge" functions for many different serial, Bluetooth, and USB barcode scanners and other device types and models include:

Software "wedge" functions provide for ASCII text data which is output from a device to be directly input (pasted) into a text field within any active software application. So, in the case of barcode scanners, the ASCII text data which is derived from the successful scan of a printed barcode label is immediately placed in a software text field in a software application (such as a cell in a spreadsheet or line in a text document where the cursor is blinking).

An alternative solution to using "wedge" software with a serial device is to instead find a device that provides HID (Human Interface Device, or keyboard emulation) functionality. This allows ASCII text to be input directly into a text field as if being typed on an attached keyboard, eliminating the need for an intermediate "wedge" program.
