Windows 11 Activation Error

Article #17032

This information applies to Mesa 4 and Mesa Pro.

If you don't connect your Mesa tablet to Wi-Fi within the first six months of purchase and activate your Windows 11 license, you will get an activation error.  You can fix the activation error by using the Windows Troubleshooter or entering the Windows product key.

Using Windows Troubleshooter

One way to activate Windows 11 is using the Activation troubleshooter.

To use the troubleshooter, select Start > Settings  > System  > Activation. Then, select Troubleshoot.

Using the Product Key

A product key is the 25-character code that looks like this:

PRODUCT KEY: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

To enter the product key after setting up Windows 11, select Start Settings > Update & Security > Activation > Update product key > Change product key.

Windows Update Causes Activation Error on Mesa Pro

There is a known Microsoft bug that can cause the activation key to disappear when you update your Mesa Pro from build 23H2 to 24H2. This bug only affects Mesa Pro units running Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC. Juniper Systems released OS Patch 25014 to address this bug. To re-apply the activation key, download and apply OS Patch 25014 or later by following the steps below.

Steps to resolve Activation Error

  1. Ensure the Mesa Pro is connected to the internet.

  2. Attach the Mesa Pro to an external power supply.

  3. Open Device Settings > Update.

  4. Select Check for updates.

  5. Select Apply updates.

  6. Allow the updates to install, and if prompted, select Restart.

  7. Repeat steps 3-6, to check for and apply any remaining updates.

  8. To confirm that the activation key was successfully re-applied, open Settings > System > Activation > Activation State.

Note: If the Update tab is not available on your Mesa Pro, download and install the Firmware & Operating System updates from the Mesa Pro downloads page. Follow steps 3-6 to re-apply the activation key.
