Summary of Changes: Android 14 to 16

Article #17171

Android 16 is now available for Archer 4. For help upgrading your device, follow the instructions in Android 16 OS Update for Archer 4.

Here's an overview of the new features:

Improved expansion pod integration. Tools like barcode scanner and GNSS receiver pod can now be accessed directly through device settings, making configuration and daily operation more intuitive.

Private space for sensitive apps. Introduced in Android 15, a lockable area on your phone keeps sensitive apps out of sight. Apps in the private space will not show in lists of recent apps, notifications, or in the launcher. A private space can be useful on shared devices. This feature can be disabled.

New predictive back feature. Preview the previous screen before navigating back with the predictive back feature in three-button navigation. As more app developers adopt the preview animation introduced in Android 14, going back will feel more predictable.

Improved notifications. Android 16 improves notifications, making them easier to manage and more intuitive. Notifications now include live updates from compatible apps and allow you to track your ride or delivery in real time.

Limited app access to photos. As more app developers adopt the access to only selected photos introduced in Android 14, you'll be asked which photos to allow the app to access. Older apps may behave differently than they used to.

Improved privacy. Android 15 includes features related to notifications to protect your privacy. Notifications are kept out of screen-sharing sessions and one-time passcodes are kept from other apps.

Updated security. Beginning in Android 14, apps for very old versions of Android may not install or may require a new installation. Updated app versions are preferred.

Addition of UltraHDR. The extended capabilities include UltraHDR in HEIC.
